ExWeb’s Links of the Week

Here at ExWeb, when we’re not outdoors, we get our adventure fix by exploring social media and the wider interweb. Sometimes we’re a little too plugged in, and browsing interesting stories turns from minutes into hours. To nourish your own adventure fix, here’s some of the best links we’ve discovered this week…

Speaking Out: American climber Beth Rodden has been at the top of her game for the past two decades. In this New York Times opinion piece, she speaks out against gender inequality in climbing and how she and her sponsors embraced motherhood.

Going Underground: The world’s leading underwater cave diver, Jill Heinerth, chats to Canadian Geographic in this podcast. She’s cave-dived beneath golf courses, bowling alleys, homes and even a BBQ restaurant.

A Yosemite Epic: Twenty-three years ago, an El Nino storm hit the Yosemite valley. This Rock and Ice feature recalls the ordeal of two climbers as they battled up the Shield route on the exposed and storm-beaten El Cap headwall.

Across Death Valley: Desert running junkie Ray Zahab is one day into a summer traverse of Death Valley from West to East, using pre-buried caches to stay supplied along the route.

Buried Alive: Last year, three skiers were caught in an avalanche on mountain pass in Canada. Entombed under four metres avalanche debris, Michelle Kadatz somehow survived being buried alive for nearly half an hour.

Statement of Youth: The 1980s saw a huge rise in climbing standards around the world. This quirky film covers the rise of sport climbing superstars Jerry Moffat, Ben Moon and company, and the development of the British sport climbing scene.
